Hands-On Science and Technology for Grades 1 to 6 are revised to match the new Ontario science and technology curriculum.

The Hands-On Science and Technology series is an instructional program for teachers of grades 1 to 6 science. Based on recent research in science education, Hands-On Science and Technology assists teachers in developing students’ scientific literacy through active inquiry, problem solving, and decision-making. The program is activity-based and child-centred, meaning that students are engaged in hands-on activities in a real-life context to explore the world around them.

The Ontario Curriculum identifies three goals that form the foundation of the science and technology program. In keeping with this focus on scientific and technological literacy, these goals are the bases for the learning expectations identified in the Hands-On Science and Technology program.

Goal 1

To relate science and technology to society and the environment

Goal 2

To develop the skills, strategies, and habits of mind required for scientific inquiry and technological problem solving

Goal 3

To understand the basic concepts of science and technology

Using themes from the Ontario Curriculum Grades 1-8 Science and Technology (2007), the Hands-On Science and Technology series provides instructional support for teachers. Each grade-level resource has four instructional units. Each unit is complete with suggested websites and books for children, science vocabulary lists, science background information, detailed lesson plans focusing on specific curricular expectations, and blackline masters for lesson visuals and activity sheets. The resource guide also offers a comprehensive and authentic assessment plan that focuses on the Achievement Levels outlined in the Ontario Science and Technology Curriculum.
